Privacy Policy for Onward

Last updated: November 2, 2026

The short version

No account, no sign-in, no email address required.

Your projects, next steps, notes, and history stay on your device.

We run no server and have no database of your data.

No analytics, tracking, advertising, or third-party SDKs.

The optional Onward Unlimited purchase is handled entirely by Apple.

What Onward stores

Onward keeps the information you enter so it can show you where each project stands. That includes:

  • The projects you create, and whatever you named them
  • Each project's next step, and whether it is marked as needing planning or stuck
  • The notes you write
  • The history of steps you have finished, with the date each one was completed
  • The order of your projects, and which are active, on hold, or archived
  • App settings and preferences

All of it is written to the app's storage on the device where you use Onward. We do not operate a server for Onward and we hold no copy of your projects; there is no account for us to look up. In this version, data does not sync between your devices.

Device backups

Onward's data lives in on-device storage. If you back up your device, through iCloud Backup or a computer on iPhone and iPad or through Time Machine on Mac, that storage may be included in the backup the same way other apps' data is. Those backups are yours, held under Apple's terms or on your own drives; we cannot read them, and we are not told they exist.

In-app purchase

Onward is free for a limited number of active projects. Onward Unlimited is an optional, one-time in-app purchase that removes the limit. The purchase is processed entirely by Apple through the App Store, including any sharing through Family Sharing. We never receive your name, your Apple Account details, or your payment information.

To know whether Onward Unlimited is unlocked, Onward asks Apple's StoreKit, on your device, for your purchase status. That check is between your device and Apple; the result is not sent to us. Apple's handling of purchases is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy, not this one.

App Store and Apple analytics

Onward contains no analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs, and no third-party code that reports your usage to us or to anyone else. Its App Store privacy label is "Data Not Collected."

Apple provides developers with aggregated App Analytics and crash reports for their own apps, and may include your device in that aggregate only if you have turned on Share With App Developers in your device's settings, under Privacy & Security, in Analytics & Improvements. That data is aggregated by Apple before we see it and does not identify you. You can change that setting at any time, and your choice does not affect how Onward works.

What Onward does not do

  • No account creation, and no name or email address collected
  • No location tracking, camera access, or microphone access
  • No contacts, health, or financial data
  • No notifications
  • No advertising SDK and no ads inside the app
  • No tracking across other companies' apps and websites, so Onward never asks for App Tracking Transparency permission
  • No selling or sharing of personal information, ever

Children's privacy

Onward is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. The app requires no account and asks for no personal information. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, email us and we will delete it.

Your rights and your control

Because your data stays on your device, most control is directly in your hands: edit or delete projects and entries in the app, or delete Onward to remove its local data from your device. If you keep device backups, remove the backup as well to clear that copy.

Depending on where you live, including under the GDPR in the European Economic Area and the UK, and the CCPA in California, you may have the right to request access to personal information we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and object to certain processing. In practice we hold no personal information from Onward, so there is generally nothing for us to return or erase. We do not sell personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of on that front.

To make a request, email support@secondactsoftware.com. We will not treat you differently for exercising these rights.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Onward evolves. If we add anything that changes what leaves your device, we will describe it here and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.

We plan to add iCloud sync in a later version. If we do, your data would sync through your own private iCloud account, using Apple's CloudKit, rather than through a server of ours. We will update this policy before that version is released.
